Face to Face Jaguar Experience at the Belize Zoo

You read that right… you can go face to face (behind a cage) with a jaguar!

In the summer of 2016, during my visit to the Belize Zoo, I eagerly opted for the jaguar experience. What does it entail? You’re led into a smaller cage within the jaguar enclosure, accompanied by a trained zoo employee. The keeper/trainer orchestrates some impressive tricks with the jaguar, including somersaults! Afterward, you get the chance to pet and feed the jaguar as it walks alongside and even atop the cage. But the highlight? The most thrilling and interactive part – receiving a jaguar kiss! It truly was an incredible, once-in-a-lifetime experience! The zoo offers a range of hands-on experiences with the animals that allow visitors to connect with the resident wildlife on a personal level. These encounters not only provide unforgettable memories but also foster a deeper appreciation for Belize’s natural heritage.

About the Zoo

Unlike traditional zoos, the Belize Zoo is not home to exotic species from all around the world. Instead, it focuses exclusively on the native wildlife of Belize. More than just a tourist attraction, the Belize Zoo is a vital center for wildlife conservation, rehabilitation, and education. The animals you will see in the enclosures have come from rehabilitation facilities, were rescued by law enforcement, or are born at the facility. The zoo’s naturalistic enclosures provide animals with space to roam and behave as they would in the wild, offering visitors a chance to observe them in their natural habitats.

“Adopt” an animal

On the zoo’s website, visitors have the option to “adopt” one of their animals for a year! The money donated goes towards food, medicine and pampering for the animal chosen. There is also a place to make donations of any amount on their website.

Tips for Your Visit

  1. Plan Ahead: Check the zoo’s operating hours and admission fees before your visit. It can be a good idea to arrive early to take advantage of cooler morning temperatures.
  2. Bring Essentials: Don’t forget to pack sunscreen, insect repellent, and water, especially if you’re visiting during the hot and humid months.
  3. Support Conservation Efforts: Consider making a donation or purchasing souvenirs from the zoo’s gift shop to support their ongoing conservation projects.
