Creamy Beef & Cavatappi Skillet Recipe
An Easy 30-Minute Comfort Food Dinner
Some nights, the last thing I want to do is make a trip to the grocery store just to cook dinner. I love challenging myself to create something delicious using ingredients I already have in my pantry and refrigerator, and this Creamy Beef & Cavatappi Skillet has quickly become one of my favorite “clean out the fridge” meals.
It’s rich, cheesy, incredibly comforting, and comes together in about 30 minutes. The combination of seasoned ground beef, tender pasta, sautéed vegetables, and a creamy cheese sauce makes it taste like a homemade version of Hamburger Helper’s cheeseburger pasta (only even better).
Whether you’re looking for an easy weeknight dinner, a budget-friendly recipe, or simply something the whole family will enjoy, this one checks all the boxes.
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- Ready in about 30 minutes
- Made with simple pantry staples
- Kid-friendly and family-approved
- Great for meal prep and leftovers
- Easy to customize with whatever vegetables you have on hand
- Rich, creamy, and packed with flavor

Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 8 oz cavatappi pasta
- 1 tablespoon olive oil (only if using lean beef)
- ½ medium yellow onion, diced (optional)
- ½ yellow bell pepper, diced (optional – adds a little sweetness)
- ½ cup peas (optional)
- 3 cloves garlic, minced (about 1 tablespoon)
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce (optional)
- ½ cup beef broth
- 4 oz cream cheese (½ of an 8 oz block), softened
- 1 cup shredded mild cheddar cheese
- ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese, plus more for serving
- ½ cup reserved pasta water
Seasonings:
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon paprika
- ½ teaspoon salt (or to taste)
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
Step 1: Prep the produce
Wash all produce. Half the yellow bell pepper and dice. Half the yellow onion and dice. Peel and dice the garlic cloves.
Step 2: Cook the Pasta
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook the cavatappi according to the package directions until al dente. Before draining, reserve about ½ cup of the pasta water. Drain the pasta and set it aside.
Step 3: Brown the Beef and Vegetables
While the pasta cooks, heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. If you’re using lean ground beef, add the olive oil first.
Add the ground beef, diced onion, and diced yellow bell pepper. Cook for 6–8 minutes, breaking up the beef as it cooks, until the meat is browned and the vegetables have softened. Drain any excess grease if necessary.
Step 4: Build the Flavor
Stir in the minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
Add the Worcestershire sauce, beef broth, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper. Stir everything together and allow it to simmer for 1–2 minutes.
Step 5: Make the Creamy Cheese Sauce
Reduce the heat to low and add the cream cheese in small pieces. Stir until completely melted.
Next, mix in the shredded cheddar cheese and Parmesan until the sauce is smooth, creamy, and cheesy.
Step 6: Finish the Dish
Stir in the frozen peas and cook for another minute or two until they’re warmed through.
Gradually add reserved pasta water 1 tbsp at a time as needed until sauce reaches desired consistency
Add the cooked cavatappi and toss until every piece of pasta is coated in the creamy sauce.
Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed.
Serve immediately with extra Parmesan cheese, freshly cracked black pepper, and chopped parsley if you have it.
Tips for Success
Don’t Skip the Pasta Water
Reserved pasta water contains starch that helps loosen the sauce while keeping it creamy and smooth instead of watery.
Shred Your Own Cheese
Freshly shredded cheddar melts much better than pre-shredded cheese, giving you a smoother sauce.
Make It Your Own
One of my favorite things about this recipe is how easy it is to customize. Try adding:
- Mushrooms
- Spinach
- Broccoli
- Bacon
- Jalapeños for a little heat
- Different cheeses like mozzarella or pepper jack
Storage & Reheating
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. When reheating, you may want to add a splash of milk or beef broth before microwaving or warming on the stovetop. This helps bring the creamy sauce back to life.
What to Serve With Creamy Beef & Cavatappi
This pasta is filling enough to stand on its own, but it’s also delicious with:
- Garlic bread
- Toasted gluten-free bread
- A fresh garden salad
- Roasted vegetables
- Steamed green beans

Frequently Asked Questions
- Can I substitute the ground beef?
- Absolutely! Ground turkey, ground chicken, or even Italian sausage all work well in this recipe.
- Can I freeze it?
- While you can freeze it, cream-based sauces can sometimes separate after thawing. I recommend enjoying it fresh or refrigerated for the best texture.
- Can I substitute the type of pasta?
- Yes! Cavatappi is my favorite for this dish because the spiral shape holds onto every bit of the creamy cheese sauce, but rotini, shells, penne, or farfalle all work well too!
